How to Choose the Right Grinder

There’s an important part of your coffee setup that deserves just as much attention as the espresso machine: the grinder. Even a great espresso machine can’t make the most of your coffee beans if they’re not ground properly.

So, if you’re wondering:

“Which grinder should I choose?”

You’re not alone. Let’s start with three questions that matter most.

1. What Kind of Coffee Do You Make?

Before choosing a grinder, think about how you usually brew your coffee.

Do you make:

☕ Espresso

💧 Pour-over

🫖 French press

Or a little bit of everything?

Different brewing methods need different grind sizes. Espresso requires a fine, consistent grind. Pour-over generally uses a medium to medium-fine grind. French press uses a much coarser grind.

If you’re buying a grinder specifically for an espresso machine, make sure it is designed to grind fine enough for espresso and gives you enough control to adjust the grind.

For this guide, we’ll focus mainly on espresso grinders.

2. How Would You Like to Make Coffee?

Once you’ve narrowed it down to espresso grinders, the next question is:

"What kind of coffee-making experience do you want?"

Some people want something simple. They don’t want to spend a lot of time adjusting their grinder every morning. Others enjoy experimenting with different coffee beans and adjusting their grind to get the best flavour from each one. And some people have a favourite coffee bean and want to be able to fine-tune their grinder specifically for it.

There’s no right or wrong answer. The best grinder is the one that matches how you actually enjoy making coffee.

3. Which Grinder Sounds Like You?

Here’s a simple way to start narrowing down your options.

“I want something simple.”

If you want a straightforward grinder that does the job without adding too much complexity to your morning routine, the ECM C-Manuale 54 is a good place to start.

It’s a simple choice for someone who wants to grind fresh beans for espresso without getting too involved in the technical side of coffee.

Think: Keep it simple.

“I want something more intuitive.”

If you’d like something that feels easy and intuitive to use, consider the LX Italia Newton 55 or Edison 65.

Both grinders feature a digital touchscreen with two programmable settings, making it easy to select your preferred dose and keep your daily routine consistent.

There's no guesswork, you can program your preferred settings and simply select them when you’re ready to grind. They offer a convenient experience while still giving you the control you need to prepare great espresso at home.

Think: Easy to use, consistent, and convenient.

“I want something more powerful and larger capacity.”

If you make a lot of coffee or simply prefer a larger grinder with a bigger hopper, the Rocket Fausto 2.1 may be a better fit.

A larger hopper means you can keep more beans ready to grind, which can be convenient if you’re making several coffees throughout the day or for family and guests.

Think: More capacity and more power.

“I want to enjoy trying different beans and their freshness.”

If you enjoy trying different coffee beans, or simply want the freshest possible grind every time, the LX Italia Edison 65 SD may be the right choice for you.

Instead of keeping a large amount of beans in the hopper, you weigh the amount of beans you want to use, place them in the hopper, and grind them when you’re ready to make your coffee.

Think: Fresh beans, easy switching and more control.

“I have a favourite medium-dark roast and want precision.”

If you already know what kind of coffee you love—and especially if you prefer a medium or dark roast, the Mazzer Philos I189D is worth considering.

This grinder gives you the level of control that more experienced home baristas often look for when they want to fine-tune their espresso.

Think: Precision for your favourite roast. A velvety mouthfeel.

“I love light-roasted coffee and want to get the most from my beans.”

Light-roasted coffee can be more challenging to extract and often benefits from careful grinding and brewing.

If light roasts are your favourite, the Mazzer Philos I200D is an option to consider.

Its innovative burrs are designed to generate outstanding flavour clarity, enhancing pleasant acidity and fruity notes.

Think: Precision for light-roasted coffee. A true flavour of coffee beans.

Do You Need the Most Expensive Grinder?

Not necessarily.

It’s easy to assume that a more expensive grinder will automatically make better coffee. But that’s not always the best way to choose.

The right grinder isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. It’s the one you’ll enjoy using.

Your Grinder Matters as Much as Your Espresso Machine

When building a home espresso setup, it’s natural to spend most of your time thinking about the machine. But your grinder plays a huge role in the final cup.

Your espresso machine controls things like water temperature, pressure, and brewing. Your grinder determines how the coffee beans are prepared for that brewing process.

A good grinder gives you the consistency and control needed to get the most out of your beans.

Not Sure Which Grinder Is Right for You?

Choosing a grinder can feel overwhelming when you’re looking at several models side by side. You don’t need to understand every specification to make a good decision.

Start with a few simple questions:

What coffee do you drink?

How often do you make it?

Do you prefer simplicity or enjoy experimenting?

Do you usually stick with one type of bean, or like trying different roasts?

Your answers will tell you much more about the grinder you need than a list of technical specifications.
